Your Guide to Xbox Kinect
In a couple of my past guides, you may have seen the word “Kinect” thrown around a couple of times and I’ve never had time to fully explain what it is, and of course why you should buy it.
Originally announced in 2008 under the code name of “Project Natal”, Kinect is a peripheral for Microsoft’s Xbox 360. So in order to play Kinect you must own an Xbox 360. Kinect’s main feature is that it is simply a device that enables you to use your entire body as the controller, and you can even use it to navigate the Xbox 360’s user interface!
This revolutionary technology is even able to track fingers in the title; Kinect Fun Labs. Many industry pundits such as Michael Pachter have touted Kinect as being the future of gaming. However the so called “future of gaming” does have its limitations.
Kinect’s greatest strength is also a limitation. The main device - the actual Kinect has a range of sensors on the front, three to be precise. Two are 3D depth sensors to enable the camera to actually work out where you are standing and a single RGB camera- like the one you may have on your phone. These cameras require around 10 feet in order to work. And for many families or homes that 10 feet may be asking too much.
Since the Kinect’s placement must also be on top of a television any obstruction of the 10 feet between you and the Kinect camera will be picked up. Because of this many living rooms are not suitable for the Kinect, so make sure your room is all set up before you decide to buy the Kinect!
It’s an understatement that the Kinect is successful, with the device holding a world record for the fastest selling consumer electronic device. The Kinect is absolutely ideal for the whole library of Xbox 360 games and appeals to all types of people.
There are a wide variety of games out now for Kinect and coming soon. At a Microsoft conference earlier this year they displayed a wide range of upcoming games for the Kinect. Including well known brands such as a Star Wars game, a Sesame Street game developed by Double Fine (The people behind the games Brutal Legend and Psychonauts) and an all-new Fable game with new technology that enables players to play the game whilst sitting down.
In addition to this for all the shooter fans there is a new Ghost Recon game that uses Kinect to customise your weapons with pinpoint precision.
The most popular bundles for the Xbox 360 are the 250gb with Kinect, which costs around £300. Or if you already have and Xbox 360 the Kinect by itself retails for around £100.
Here at Xbox Mooch we can find you the best possible price for the bundle or the Kinect itself! For a device that enables all the family to play and have fun is surely one that is worth anyones while
